Steve and Angie Smith Young Alumni Scholarship

Each year, the Office of Alumni Relations presents an incoming freshman undergraduate student with the Steve and Angie Smith Young Alumni Scholarship in the amount of $6,000. The scholarship is awarded to a student who 1) is a first-generation college student or represents at-risk and/or underrepresented student populations, 2) demonstrates financial need, and 3) will enhance the diversity of the student body at the University of Utah.

Applicant must:

  • Be an incoming freshman at the University of Utah for the 2025-26 academic year
  • Have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5
  • Be a first-generation college student or represent at-risk and/or underrepresented student populations
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Enhance the diversity of the student body at the University of Utah
  • Not be a current recipient of an athletic scholarship at the University of Utah

NeedBased Scholarships: To be considered for a need‐based scholarship award, you are required to complete the 2025‐2026 FAFSA application. The application becomes available October 2024 and will require information from your 2023 taxes. (Students classified as dependent by FAFSA standards must also include parent 2023 tax information) FAFSA applications must be submitted online no later than March 1, 2025.


Incomplete applications will not be considered. Application forms must include all of the following: 

  • a current transcript
  • name and email of a reference for a letter of recommendation
  • a 1‐page resume
  • a one-two page (double‐spaced) essay

    • Work experience, including internships.
    • Honors and awards, including dates received.
    • Special activities related to your academic studies, including dates.
    • Special programs or organizations outside your academic studies, including dates.

    We suggest you work with the Career & Professional Development Center to ensure your resume is written to professional standards.

  13. Upload a current transcript. Students may download unofficial transcripts directly from the Campus Information System (CIS) if you are a current University of Utah student. High school students should upload their most recent high school transcript.
  14. Please provide the name and email address of someone that can speak to your academic ability. The reference will be emailed from the scholarship system to provide information to support your application. If you are requesting a letter from someone with a University of Utah email, you must use this format: uXXXXXXX@utah.edu. Please check back before the application deadline of March 8 to make sure your reference has submitted a letter. Applications without a letter will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.
