SCHOLARSHIP MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Larry H. and Gail Miller Foundation & Union Scholarship for Veteran Students is to promote student veteran leadership within the campus community. The Veterans Support Center (VSC) and the University Union promote leadership by cultivating social, cultural, co-curricular and service opportunities. Recognizing that student veterans possess leadership skills from their military experience, the VSC and Union encourage student veterans to further develop these skills within the campus community.

PURPOSE

The Larry H. and Gail Miller Foundation & Union Scholarship for Veteran Students provides four (4) scholarships of $2,500 to assist student veterans in accomplishing their academic goals. Two scholarships will be awarded for fall 2023 and two scholarships for spring 2024. The purpose is to identify and recognize a student veteran whose involvement has or will contribute to the overall mission of the VSC & the Union. This includes students who are, or will be associated with different leadership opportunities within the VSC or Union. These opportunities can include, but are not limited to, involvement with an office or event(s) in the VSC, Union, or veteran-focused organization, activity, or initiative.

The Union Scholarship committee defines leadership as the ability to communicate and embody a vision so that others commit to fulfilling the mission and goals of the University of Utah, the Veterans Support Center, and the University Union. Leaders demonstrate self-knowledge, role modeling, integrity, decision-making ability, conflict resolution skills, and vision (adapted from the Association of College Unions International). Leadership is not always defined by holding a formal position.

Veteran Support Center Definition of a Student Veteran: A collective term for any student who has served or is serving in any capacity of the U.S. Armed Forces, regardless of location or duration, and has not been dishonorably discharged.

ELIGIBILITY

• The student must be a student veteran as defined by the Veterans Support Center.*
• The student veteran must be a current full-time student in good standing with the University of Utah and will be attending full-time during Fall Semester 2023.
• If an undergraduate, the student veteran must have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours at the University of Utah by the end of Summer Semester 2023.
• If a graduate student, the student veteran must have earned a minimum of 18 credit hours at the University of Utah by the end of Summer Semester 2023.
• The student veteran must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher at the University of Utah.
• The student veteran must have never been convicted of a felony or dishonorably discharged from the military.
• The student veteran must have demonstrated their leadership contributions to the community and/or campus in a significant manner or have a specific plan and commitment to do so.
• While the student veteran must demonstrate significant merit, financial need will also be considered.

Many students who are selected to receive a University scholarship after May 12, 2015 are required by state law to certify under penalty of perjury that they are eligible to receive the scholarship as a U.S. citizen or a citizen of another country who is lawfully present within the United States. Students who have both graduated from a recognized Utah high school and who are awarded a scholarship funded by a private donor are not required to certify their lawful presence before receiving a privately funded scholarship. (This scholarship is a privately funded scholarship.)

RECIPIENT REQUIREMENTS

• The recipients of the scholarship are expected to attend the annual Union Scholarship Celebration event during Thursday, September 14, 2023. The celebration promotes the scholarship on a community level and will be the time when recipients are publicly recognized and awarded.
• Sign scholarship Acceptance Forms.
• Required to be Union Scholarship Ambassador (promote 1-2 scholarship fundraising events throughout the year)
