Environmental and Sustainability Studies Scholarship Application

Overview: This application will be applied to scholarships offered through the department of Environmental and Sustainability Studies, as well as those offered through the College of Social and Behavioral Science. For information on the specific scholarships offered, as well as resources to aid in the preparation of your application, please refer to the College of Social and Behavioral Science scholarship page here.

Requirements: Must be a declared Environmental and Sustainability Studies major. 

Please note: If you are a double major within the College of Social and Behavioral Science you must complete a departmental application for each of your majors in order to be considered for all possible scholarships.

Supplemental Questions
  1. What is your anticipated semester and year of graduation? (EX: Spring 2024)
  2. Please include a personal statement describing your background, educational and career plans, and how receiving a scholarship would help you to continue your education. You should be thoughtful and clear in your personal statement to help the reviewer understand what has brought you to this point in your life, and where you intend to go. This statement will also help the reviewer ascertain how well you write.
  3. Letters of Recommendation - Environmental and Sustainability Studies

    • TWO letters of recommendation are required, and at least one of these must be from an academic source, such as a current or former professor/teacher. The other can be from an employer, volunteer supervisor, but not a friend or family member. Applications that do not have the required letters will not be considered for awards. Please enter the email addresses of the two persons who have agreed to write letters of recommendation for you. 

      • Your reference must agree to write a letter BEFORE you put their contact information into your application. The very moment their contact information is input, an auto notification will be sent to them. If your reference did not agree to write a reference letter for you, they have every right to reject the system’s request.
      • Once your reference has agreed to write a letter for you, it is up to YOU to check your application to make sure the letter was submitted. You cannot see the letter but will be able to tell if it was received. Check the status of your letters by clicking on the "References" tab above.
      • Letters must be submitted by your reference by February 7, 2024.
  4. List the high school from which you graduated, all community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities attended. Please make sure to include summer and study-abroad programs.
  5. List and describe college and high school activities and special programs (include student government, athletics, school publications, student-faculty committees, arts, exchange programs, tutoring, etc.). Do not use acronyms.
  6. List and describe awards, scholarships, or special recognitions you have received, including dates:
  7. Identify the three most significant courses you have taken in preparation for your career and for each describe why they are significant to you.
  8. Please upload a copy of your current academic records. (If you are currently a freshman, please upload your high school transcripts.)
  9. Please upload transcripts from other Colleges or Universities at which you have completed at least 15 credit hours. Upload as one PDF file.
  10. Please list any pertinent volunteer and/or work experience that have helped you enrich your skills and abilities to be considered as a candidate, e.g., internships; volunteer opportunities, non-profit; public/private organizations, etc. Do not repeat items listed previously. Do not use acronyms.
  11. The following essay is optional and only required of those who wish to apply to the Rick Carter Scholarship.

    The purpose of this scholarship:

    Utah is a beautiful place with many national parks, monuments and recreation areas and millions of acres of proposed wilderness. The state is also rich in natural resources including oil, natural gas, coal, oil shale and oil sands as well as potential for renewable energy such as geothermal, solar and wind. The preservation of the environment and spectacular scenery creates conflict and debate with the development of the natural resources and related supporting infrastructure, including rapid growth of smaller cities and counties. This scholarship is for students that strive to find compromise and solution-oriented balance to this debate that will sustain the Utah lifestyle, protect the environment and encourage appropriate conventional and renewable energy development.

    In 250 words or less please address the purpose of this scholarship.

  12. To be eligible for scholarships that list financial need as a criterion, a completed FAFSA application is required.

    Applicants who are U.S. Citizens, Legal Permanent Residents, and Eligible Nonresidents as defined by FAFSA are encouraged to complete an online federal financial aid application. Students not able to file an online FAFSA application (i.e., Dreamers with or without DACA and International Students) can fill out a paper application and submit it to the University Office of Scholarships & Financial Aid in the Student Services Building, Room 105. Click here to determine if you are eligible to complete an online FAFSA application.
