The Ellen Cristina Steffensen Cannon Undergraduate Scholarship
This scholarship opportunity is for undergraduate students in the College of Humanities as well as for direct descendants of Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon; award includes a $12,000 scholarship for the 2022-23 academic year.

PURPOSE
The Steffensen Cannon Undergraduate Scholarship was stablished in 1989, the Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon Scholarship has enabled more than 500 students to pursue excellence in their chosen fields of education and humanities. The legacy of the scholarship is their motto – *to be your best, accomplish the most, and help the most! *- which is truly embodied by the Steffensen Cannon scholars and the alumni of the award, many of whom have gone on to influential careers in education, business, law, and other fields.The Steffensen Cannon Scholarship was established by Hugh Cannon to honor his mother, Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon. This award enables University of Utah students to pursue excellence in their chosen fields of Education and Humanities, without the burden of employment.

ELIGIBILITY
Steffensen Cannon scholars are full-time, matriculated undergraduate University of Utah students. Applicants should be in good academic standing and model academic excellence. Applicants must be:

  1. Undergraduate students in a College of Humanities major, or
  2. Direct descendants* of Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon; descendants may pursue any undergraduate program of study at the University of Utah

(If an applicant is a descendant, a statement showing the direct lineage must accompany the Steffensen Cannon application. Please be sure to answer the application questions accordingly. Descendant applicants who are not studying in the Colleges of Education or Humanities may apply through either of the graduate links if they are a graduate student, or either of the undergraduate links if they are an undergraduate student.)

Please be sure to apply to the appropriate listing in the AcademicWorks application. For example, if you are an undergraduate student studying in the College of Humanities, be sure to choose the option entitled ‘Steffensen Cannon Scholarship – Undergraduate – College of Humanities.’

DEADLINES: Student’s should submit their application no later than December 29, 2023, and letters of recommendation are due by January 5, 2024.

Supplemental Questions
  1. Please upload a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
  2. Please type a personal statement of a 1000 words or less describing general activities, intellectual interests, proposed course of study, academic achievements, and leadership and community experiences.
  3. Incoming freshmen who are applying for the undergraduate scholarship must upload official transcripts from all high schools attended.
  4. Undergraduate students must upload official transcripts of all college and university work. If applying for a scholarship renewal, a copy of the previous semester’s academic grades is satisfactory.
  5. (Optional) If an applicant is a descendant, upload a statement showing the direct lineage to Ellen Christina Steffensen Cannon.

    If a direct descendant wishes to claim financial need, please have a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) processed.

  6. (Optional) For renewal applicants only - Please provide a brief statement describing the impact of the award on your education and research thus far, and updating the Committee on your progress over the past year.
