Jesse Galen Smock Memorial Scholarship

Background: Provided by Sheena McFarland and James Houchins, this scholarship is established in
memory of their family member, Jesse Galen Smock. Sheena and James are long-time supporters of
the University of Utah, and the equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts on campus. James is a current
student studying engineering and entertainment arts, after serving honorably in the military for
several years. Sheena is the director of marketing at the David Eccles School of Business, and
received her bachelors in communication, a Master of Public Administration, as well as her PhD in
educational leadership and policy at the University of Utah.

Criteria: This scholarship is offered to deserving underrepresented students at the University of Utah.
Preference will be given to students whose parents or family members have been impacted by
alcoholism. Candidates will be selected through an application including a personal statement.

scholarship coordinator and committee in the Center for Equity & Student Belonging.

Criteria:
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be registered as a full-time undergraduate student (12 credit hours or more)
- No grade point average (GPA) requirement.
- Must be admitted and currently enrolled to the University of Utah.
- Must have graduated from an accredidated U.S. high school.
- This is not a need-based scholarship.
- Candidates will be selected through an application including a personal statement
outlining the impact alcoholism has had on their family.
