Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine Office of Admission Scholarships 

Through these scholarships, the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine Office of Admissions is able to provide recognition and financial assistance to members of the incoming class. class. Every year, the SFESOM Scholarship Committee strives to support as many deserving students as possible by selecting scholarship recipients whose attributes and actions resonate with the wishes of the donors.

There are 6 different scholarship funds supported through the SFESOM Office of Admissions. Details on each are found below. By filling out this application, you will automatically be considered for all scholarships offered by the SFESOM Office of Admissions. The scholarship committee will not be reviewing your AMCAS or SFESOM secondary application, so please include all relevant information in your scholarship application.

Application Timeline:
Applications will be reviewed beginning in mid-February and will be awarded on a rolling basis.

Need of Financial Assistance:
SFESOM Office of Admissions scholarships that aim to support students in need of financial assistance require the applicant to have identified one or more of the following indicators on their AMCAS application:

Economic Indicators:

  • Socioeconomic Status (SES) Disadvantaged Indicator (EO-1 or EO-2)
  • Participated in Childhood State or Federal Assistance Programs
  • Pell Grant eligible
  • Qualified for the AMCAS Application Fee Assistance Program
  • Other Impactful Experiences (Derived from the AMCAS Data Point) that indicate the need for financial assistance

Geographic Indicators:

  • Preferred County Address is Rural
  • Childhood Geography is Rural
  • Childhood Community was Medically Underserved

Educational Attainment:

  • First Generation College Student (Derived from Parental Education Level) 

Native/Tribal Affiliation:

  • Enrolled member of a federally recognized American Indian/Alaskan Native tribal nation

Dr. Robert H. Ballard and Dorothy Cannon Ballard Endowed Scholarship
Two scholarships are available at $30,000 per year for 4 years of medical school. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Dr. Robert H. Ballard
Dr. Robert H. Ballard graduated from the U’s medical school in 1994. Dr. Ballard was a pioneer in joint replacement surgery in the Inland Empire region of Southern California and has helped thousands of patients in his 40 years as a physician. Knowing the need to attract top-notch scholars, Dr. Ballard established the Dr. Robert H. Ballard and Dorothy Cannon Ballard Endowed Scholarship at the U and would come to lunch to meet the recipients and their families every year. He loved getting to meet the recipients and remained close to several students. He was a fabulous, bright, fun man, and was nearly blind. In spite of his vision problems, he was a voracious reader and life-long learner.

Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class with an excellent GPA, MCAT Score, Phenomenal Research, and Clinical Experiences
Preference is given to applicants who indicated Utah as their legal state of residence on their AMCAS application.

J. Gordon and Betty M. Browning Endowed Scholarship
Three scholarships are available at $5,000 each this is a one-time scholarship. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Gordon and Betty Browning
Gordon and Betty Browning lived in California most of their lives but moved to Utah to retire. After moving to Utah, they became interested in the Health Sciences at the U. Gordon and Betty left their estate to the U for scholarships. The Browning Auditorium (Wintrobe Building) and The Browning Plaza (between Wintrobe and building 521) were named after them for their contributions. They were kind and generous folks.

Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class. The Browning Scholarship is awarded to students who have excelled academically and are in need of financial assistance*. Students who receive assistance from the scholarship fund are encouraged by the donors, when and if they are financially capable, to reimburse the scholarship fund in an amount at least equal to that which they have received so that future students may have the opportunity to receive assistance from the scholarship fund.

Richard A. Graham and Audrey D. Schwartzbein Endowed (RAGADS) Scholarship
Four scholarships are available at $9,000 each this is a one-time scholarship. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Richard Graham and Audrey Schwartzbein
Dr. Graham graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1983. He played football for the U and distinguished himself as a talented tight end during his undergraduate years. Dick married Dr. Audrey Schwartzbein, a graduate of the University of Southern California. Dick and Audrey created the RAGADS Scholarship using their combined initials (Richard A. Graham and Audrey D. Schwartzbein).

Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class with a high academic merit.

Dr. John C. and Bliss L. Hubbard Foundation Scholarship Endowment
Ten scholarships are available at $6,000; this is a one-time scholarship. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Dr. John C. and Bliss L. Hubbard
Dr. and Mrs. Hubbard left a bequest for the University of Utah that was originally a fund to help students who needed emergency financial help during their medical studies. The fund still supports the emergency loan fund, but now also supports the Hubbard Foundation Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is open to all incoming medical school students.

Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class. Although not required students in need of financial assistance* is also reviewed.

Donal  B. Hutchison Endowed Scholarship in the School of Medicine
Two scholarships are available at $6,000; this is a one-time scholarship. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Donal Hutchison
Donal B. Hutchison graduated from Ogden High School in 1946. After joining the U.S. Army and serving in Korea, he enrolled at the University of Utah. He graduated with a BA Degree in Business Administration and subsequently worked at First Security Bank for many years. He is a Past President of the Ute Club, Past President and Past Treasurer of the Ogden Chapter of the American Institute of Banking, and Past President of the Ogden Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was the owner of Summit County Title and a partner in Gaydos Investments, LLC. He happily retired after selling his business interests. He was an enthusiastic skier and tennis player, but his primary joy was golf, at which he excelled. He became a benefactor at the U Health Sciences Center and established the Donal B. Hutchison Endowed Scholarship at the School of Medicine.

Selection Criteria:
Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class with outstanding academic achievement. Leadership roles, and/or military involvement, and students in need of financial assistance* are also considered but not required.

Richard H. and Joann O. Keller Endowed Scholarship  in the School of Medicine
Three scholarships are available at $15,000; this is a one-time scholarship. This scholarship is contingent upon the receipt of funds each year.

About Dr. Richard H. Keller
Dr. Keller was a resident in internal medicine at the U following his graduation from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Keller was a successful radiologist in Salt Lake City for his entire career. He lives near the U and helped the School of Medicine interview applicants for medical school for many years. The Richard H. and Joann O. Keller Scholarship is named for Dr. Keller and his late wife Joann.

Eligible candidates shall be an accepted student into the incoming 2024 medical class who are in need of financial assistance* and who have excelled academically.
