Trace Carrillo
The Trace Carrillo Memorial Endowed Scholarships
The Trace Carrillo Memorial Endowed Scholarships cover the tuition and course fees for two students to attend a U-EXPLORE Avalanche 1 course. Of the two scholarships, one is awarded to an undergraduate student studying any emphasis area in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism; the second is awarded to an undergraduate student studying any major and working for Outdoor Adventures as a trip leader. Via two-page personal statement, applicants should describe how participation in the avalanche course will provide them with the decision-making and leadership skills to become a role model for others in winter backcountry activities. In addition, please describe how you express Trace’s signature characteristics, namely a zest for life, a passion for exploration, a concern for protecting wild places, and above all, a kindness towards others.
About the award:
This scholarship honors the life of Trace Carrillo, a vibrant and compassionate human, whose enthusiasm as both a steward and recreator inspired all those he interacted with to care more deeply about our wild places. Trace passed away on April 1, 2020 in an avalanche on Taylor Mountain in the Teton Range. Trace graduated with a BS in Parks, Recreation & Tourism in 2016, and his passion for wilderness stewardship ultimately led him to work with the USFS as a wilderness ranger for the Jackson Ranger District. May Trace’s spirit and enthusiasm live on by furthering avalanche education for University of Utah students and through his motto, “Dream, Achieve, Dream, Achieve. Happiness does not equal comfort!”
